It was the Christmas of 78, 1978 that is. I was the last one to open the last present under the tree. It was a small rectangle box that seemed to weigh about 2 pounds. I realized at this moment that it was not the bow and arrow set that I really wanted.
After tearing off the wrapping, I found I was holding an Olympus OM-1 35mm camera. You know the kind, “automatic nothing” kind. It was silver and black, with the film advance lever, and rewind film reel that you did by hand.
My cat was happy to pose for me outside in the grass, and I focused like I had seen my Dad do on his big Minolta camera over the years. I watched as my photos came to view in the film trays as my Dad developed them with the “Professional Kodak Home Developing Lab” we set up in the basement where it was dark.
After high school I bought several cameras from Fuji, Canon, Minolta, Olympus, and decided Nikon was the best for fast, sharp focus. My favorites to this day are the Nikon D750 and D850.
As the years went by I started stage performing and switched gears to audio and video recording and production. I learned computer graphics and photography to make VHS box covers and cassette tape inserts with photos, that I took from video still shots.
My experience in shooting landscapes, outdoor sports, building architecture, and live performances fueled my interest in digital editing starting with Jasc Paint Shop Pro 11 which I still use today along with Adobe Photoshop.
I studied all I could about posing, lighting styles, and photo layouts from the photographs and photographers that did photoshoots for celebrities Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Bettie Page, Betty Grable, Mae West, James Dean, and Steve McQueen.
Graphics and digital photography has evolved quite fast over the last decade to where photo restoration, photo altering, photo layouts, and being a digital media creator for Facebook, Instagram, and Linkedin is now a daily pastime and necessity for professional business as well as personal enjoyment.
Now days, you can usually find me shooting photos in my photo studio in Anderson, Indiana at Anderson Photo Studio & Graphics, or following some of my favorite photographers on the internet like Lindsay Adler, Sue Brice, Francis Wilson, or studying Photoshop with Colin Smith and Unmesh Dinda, from Photoshop Café and PixImperfect.
